Ammano Shrimp

AMANO Shrimp

Neocardinia japonica - The best algae eater around. While it's true other shrimp may eat different kinds of alage, Ammano's are bigger, almost twice the size of other alage eating shrimp and because of their size they eat more.

Cherry Red Shrimp

CHERRY RED Shrimp

Neocaridia denticulata sinensis var. red - right decorative little beasts, they are bright red, breed like crazy, and don't require saltwater to raise the young like Ammanos.

Bumblebee shrimp

BUMBLEBEE Shrimp

Caridina sp. "Bumblebee" - There are a few color varieties of these guys, only the common form is pictured here. The red form is the "crystal red shrimp" and there's a black form too. These are the most seneitive shrimp to ammonia and the hardest to keep. You don't need an ammonia test kit if you have these guys, if your ammonia goes above absolute zero you have a tank of pink dead shrimp.

Spotted Shrimp

SPOTTED Shrimp

NOT an algae eating shrimp, although you might not guess as they eat microorganisms living in the algae and thus might look like they're eating alage.

Atyopsis moluccensis

WOOD Shrimp

Atyopsis moluccensis Asian freshwater filter feeding shrimp. Can be very variable in color, sometimes they're brown, sometimes they're almost white sometimes they're orange.

Blue Shrimp

BLUE Shrimp

Neocardinia - also called "Malayan", "Rainbow", "Taiwan blue" and "chaemaleon" shrimp - for a reason: they change color depending on their mood and surroundings. They can be red, burgundy, blue or green.

Rhino, or Red Nosed or RUdolph Shrimp

RHINO Shrimp

eggs

Cardinia gracilirostris - the rhino, or red nosed, or mosquito or rudolph shrimp is very different from all the other shrimp on this page. When it swims it hovers like a helicoptor. It's a bit bigger than most others, comically amusing and eats algae like there's no tomorrow.

TIGER Shrimp

blue

Cardinia sp - A lot of the small algae eating shrimp look alike, but this one really stands out. Probably my favorite of this tribe. Color forms such as black and blue have been observed although are far from common.

UNKNOWN Shrimp

Neocardinia

VAMPIRE Shrimp

Attya gabonese. Gabonense means "from Gabon" (in Africa) although this shrimp apparantly came from Cameroon. Ugly little spuds, but cute in their own little ugly way. They're filter feeding shrimp and don't eat blood! Their front claws have tarantuala like points that look a bit like fangs which I suppose is how they got their name. Would tarantuala shrimp be a better name? Expensive little bleeders too - 5X what I pay for wood shrimp. Much more shy and secretive than any other shrimp. I hade one for 2 months before I ever saw it again.
